Introduction

Architecture is more than just blueprints and buildings—it’s about creating spaces that serve a purpose, tell a story, and make a lasting impact. In this episode of What It Takes, host Jamie Seeker interviews award-winning architect Paul Ladensack, Principal and Partner at CCBG Architects, about his approach to meaningful architecture and adaptive reuse. With more than 30 years of experience and a heart for community-driven design, Paul shares the philosophies, challenges, and victories that have shaped his impressive career.

Who is Paul Ladensack?

Paul Ladensack joined CCBG Architects in 1995 and became a partner in 2005. With deep expertise in cultural, religious, commercial, and residential projects, Paul has earned numerous regional and national awards. But beyond the accolades, he’s known for his thoughtful, client-first approach to design and his passion for revitalizing historic spaces.

“Every Building Has a DNA”

One of the most striking takeaways from Paul’s interview is his philosophy around adaptive reuse. Rather than demolishing historic structures, Paul believes in honoring their “DNA”—the unique history, design, and energy of a space—and working with it to create something new. This mindset has guided many of CCBG’s most successful projects in Phoenix’s Warehouse District and beyond.

“Every building has a DNA. If you understand it, the project will go smoothly.”

This approach allows Paul and his team to bring new life to underutilized spaces while preserving their essence and connection to the community.

Designing with Purpose & Listening with Intention

Throughout the episode, Paul emphasizes the importance of listening to clients—not just their functional needs, but their values, stories, and aspirations. He considers architecture a form of storytelling, where each structure reflects the people and purpose behind it.

“It’s not about us being architects—it’s about being architects for our clients.”

This mindset helps Paul and his team design spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful to those who inhabit them.

Notable Project: Gethsemane Lutheran Church

One project that Paul reflects on with pride is the transformation of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Tempe. Originally brought in after two prior architects failed to capture the congregation’s vision, Paul found a way to preserve the original church building and repurpose it—saving both the history and the heart of the community’s worship space.

“We were able to save the existing church and turn it into a lobby. The new space became an extension of their legacy.”

Mentorship and Growing the Next Generation

In addition to his professional work, Paul has also taught at Arizona State University and served as a guest critic at multiple schools of architecture. His advice for aspiring architects?

“Travel early, listen to your professors, and embrace criticism—it’s not a bad thing; it’s how you grow.”

Signature Insight: What It Takes to Be a Business Owner

As with every What It Takes guest, Jamie asked Paul the show’s signature question: What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur and business owner?

His answer was simple but powerful:

“Seek colleagues of shared direction.”

“Surrounding yourself with people who share your values and vision makes all the difference—not just in work, but in life.”

Paul’s Dream Project

When asked about a dream project, Paul shared that he would love to design a Presidential Library—a space with historical weight, national impact, and deep architectural meaning.

“If you’re looking for meaning and a challenge, that would be it.”

Final Thoughts

Paul Ladensack isn’t just designing buildings—he’s shaping communities, preserving stories, and mentoring the next generation of architects. His approach to meaningful architecture and adaptive reuse is a masterclass in balancing creativity, functionality, and heart.
