Business Growth Planning Starts with Seeing Opportunity

Before founding Big Deal Agency in 2013, Glen served with the U.S. Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow before transitioning into public relations and digital marketing.

While working at a traditional PR firm, he recognized something many others didn’t. Digital advertising was quickly becoming the future of marketing, yet many agencies continued relying on traditional methods.

Rather than accepting the status quo, Glen trusted his instincts. When leadership wasn’t willing to embrace digital marketing, he made the difficult decision to leave and build a company around the future he believed was coming.

One of the biggest lessons from Glen’s story is that business growth planning often begins by recognizing opportunities before everyone else does.

Building a Business Around Accountability

From the very beginning, Glen wanted Big Deal Agency to operate differently than traditional marketing firms.

Instead of relying on confusing reports or industry jargon, he built the company around measurable results and complete transparency.

Every client understands:

  • Where their investment is going
  • Why specific strategies are being recommended
  • What results those strategies are producing
  • How success is being measured

According to Glen, clients deserve accountability, not assumptions.

That philosophy has become one of the cornerstones of Big Deal Agency’s continued success.

Business Growth Planning Evolves as Companies Grow

As Big Deal Agency expanded from a specialized advertising company into a full-service digital marketing agency, Glen realized that the business needed stronger operational systems.

One of his biggest changes was moving away from a traditional monthly retainer model.

Instead, his agency now operates much like a law firm by tracking billable hours.

This approach helps the company:

  • Prevent scope creep
  • Improve profitability
  • Allocate resources effectively
  • Protect employee workloads
  • Create transparency with clients
  • Make better operational decisions

These business growth planning strategies have allowed the company to continue growing without sacrificing quality or overwhelming the team.

Planning for Sustainable Growth

Many business owners believe growth simply means adding more customers.

Glen believes sustainable growth requires building systems that can support those customers.

By tracking billable hours and employee utilization, his team can better understand:

  • Client profitability
  • Team capacity
  • Employee performance
  • Resource allocation
  • Operational efficiency

Instead of making decisions based solely on revenue, Glen focuses on building a business that remains profitable and scalable over the long term.

Great Leaders Understand Their Entire Business

One of the most practical lessons Glen shared was that founders should understand every major function inside their business.

Early in his entrepreneurial journey, he intentionally learned web development, graphic design, and other technical skills.

His goal wasn’t to become the expert forever.

His goal was to better estimate workloads, understand employee performance, make smarter hiring decisions, and step in whenever necessary.

Those experiences ultimately strengthened both his leadership and his business growth planning process.

Never Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Glen also offered valuable advice for business owners hiring marketing agencies.

Too many entrepreneurs feel intimidated by technical language or industry jargon.

His advice is simple.

If you’re investing your money, you deserve to understand exactly where it’s going.

Never hesitate to ask questions until you’re completely comfortable with the answers.

Transparency builds trust, and trust builds lasting partnerships.

Business Growth Planning Begins with Solving Problems

One of Glen’s biggest pieces of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is not to start a business simply because someone else has been successful.

Instead, ask yourself:

  • Can I solve a problem better?
  • Can I deliver faster?
  • Can I create greater value?
  • Can I improve the customer experience?

If the answer is yes, you’ve found a genuine opportunity.

Successful businesses aren’t built by chasing trends.

They’re built by solving meaningful problems.

The Reality of Entrepreneurship

Business ownership isn’t easy.

Glen believes entrepreneurs need:

  • Patience
  • Resilience
  • Mental toughness
  • Passion
  • Adaptability

One of his favorite comparisons is baseball.

Hall of Fame players fail seven out of ten times.

Business owners experience setbacks just as frequently.

The difference is learning from those failures instead of allowing them to stop your progress.

Business Growth Planning Lessons Every Entrepreneur Can Apply

Throughout this episode, Glen reminds us that successful businesses don’t happen by accident.

They grow because leaders intentionally create systems that support long-term success.

Some of the biggest takeaways include:

  • Create a clear vision.
  • Measure everything that matters.
  • Build accountability into every process.
  • Protect your team’s time.
  • Understand your business operations.
  • Continue learning.
  • Communicate transparently.
  • Don’t fear failure.

These business growth planning principles can help entrepreneurs build businesses that are not only profitable today but sustainable for years to come.
