What does justice with a human touch really look like? In this moving episode of Business Owners Tell All: What It Takes, host Jamie Seeker talks withKyle Bachus, co-founder of Bachus & Schanker, LLC in Denver, Colorado, to find out.
Kyle’s story isn’t just about building one of the largest personal injury law firms in the region — it’s about turning grief into growth, and building a business that truly serves people in their darkest moments.
🔹 From Mock Trials to Real Impact
At just 17 years old, Kyle argued in front of a mock Supreme Court and realized the courtroom might just be his calling. Fast forward to post-law school, Kyle and his partner started Bachus & Schanker with less than $15,000 and a written agreement on a napkin.
“We wrote the deal on a napkin at a bar. I got paid $500 a month for the first six months. That’s how we started.”
– Kyle Bachus
Their Denver-based firm now has 30+ lawyers, five offices, and over 125 employees — but the mission has always remained the same: to deliver justice with a human touch.
🔹 Business Planning with Purpose
Launching a firm from scratch came with creative strategies and high risk — but also fierce commitment. Kyle shares how betting on himself was the biggest early business decision he ever made.
“What was I going to regret more? Doing this or not doing this?”
He built the foundation of his business by asking a bold question: Would I hire me? That mindset shaped the culture and client-first strategy behind their long-term success.
🔹 When Tragedy Becomes the Mission
Everything changed when Kyle’s mother was tragically killed by a concrete truck while crossing the street. After two decades representing wrongful death cases, he became the grieving son on the other side of the legal system.
“I’m a fixer. But some problems can’t be fixed — only felt, supported, and honored.”
This loss reshaped how he practices law. It also inspired his bestselling book, Unthinkable, which provides practical and emotional support for families dealing with catastrophic loss.
🔹 Justice with a Human Touch: What It Means
Kyle didn’t just write a book — he restructured his entire practice to serve clients more holistically. That includes adding victim advocates, connecting families with probate and estate resources, and guiding them through trauma, not just courtrooms.
“We built a team around being victim-centric and holistic — not just legal advisors, but support systems.”
This approach is why justice with a human touch is more than just a phrase — it’s his operating philosophy.
🔹 What It Takes to Be a Business Owner
As with every guest, we asked Kyle the question at the heart of the show: What does it take to be a business owner?
“There are dreamers and there are doers. What are you doing every day to make your dream come true?”
Kyle reminds us that success isn’t about never failing — it’s about pushing forward even when everything feels uncertain. That kind of clarity — and courage — is what builds great businesses with staying power.
