Business Owners Tell All: What It Takes

Business owner learning and development is one of the most important factors behind long-term entrepreneurial success, and few stories demonstrate that better than Jesse Jackson, founder of Mango Automotive.

In this episode of Business Owners Tell All: What It Takes, Jesse shares how she built a fast-growing automotive repair company in Austin, Texas, scaling from zero to eight figures in just four years while balancing leadership, acquisitions, mentorship, and raising seven children.

Her story is proof that business growth starts with personal growth.

How Business Owner Learning and Development Fueled Rapid Growth

Before launching Mango Automotive, Jesse worked as a fractional Chief Product Officer in software. While working in the automotive technology space, she recognized a massive opportunity developing inside the industry.

A large percentage of automotive shop owners were nearing retirement age, creating one of the biggest wealth transfer opportunities in the market.

Instead of remaining in software, Jesse transitioned into automotive repair acquisitions and built Mango Automotive through strategic growth and operational systems.

Within four years, the company scaled to more than $20 million in annual revenue.

That level of growth required continuous business owner learning and development at every stage.

Why Continuous Learning Matters for Business Owners

One of the biggest themes throughout the episode was how entrepreneurs evolve as their companies grow.

Jesse explained that many business owners hesitate to pursue ambitious goals because they do not yet feel prepared. Her perspective was different.

You are not supposed to already be the person capable of achieving the goal. You become that person through the process of building it.

To accelerate her own development, Jesse invested heavily in:

  • Mentorship
  • Books and self-education
  • Business communities
  • Acquisition training
  • Learning from experienced operators

She specifically credited entrepreneur Roland Frasier as one of the mentors who helped shape her acquisition strategy and leadership development.

For business owners looking to scale, learning from people who have already achieved the results you want can dramatically shorten the learning curve.

Leadership Development and Letting Go of Control

As Mango Automotive expanded, Jesse realized she could no longer operate the business entirely on her own.

In the beginning, she and her business partner handled:

  • Marketing
  • HR
  • Payroll
  • Finance
  • Operations

Eventually, growth forced them to hire specialists and build a leadership structure capable of supporting multiple locations.

One of the most valuable lessons she shared was this:

“You are the limiting factor in your business.”

That mindset shift is critical for entrepreneurs focused on business owner learning and development because scaling requires delegation, trust, and leadership maturity.

Decision Making and Entrepreneurial Growth

Jesse also discussed how her decision-making process evolved over time.

Earlier in her entrepreneurial journey, she moved quickly on opportunities because she feared missing out. As the company grew larger, she learned that every decision carried greater consequences for employees, systems, and long-term operations.

She compared entrepreneurship to standing in an airport:

  • Some people never board a plane because they are frozen by indecision
  • Others jump on every plane without considering where it leads

As a leader, she learned to balance action with intentional strategy.

That evolution became a major part of her own business owner learning and development journey.

The Reality of Balancing Business and Family

In addition to operating multiple businesses, Jesse is also raising seven children.

Rather than presenting entrepreneurship as perfectly balanced, she openly discussed the constant pressure and responsibility that comes with building companies while raising a family.

According to Jesse, there is no perfect formula for balance.

There is only a willingness to continue moving forward through the struggle.

That honesty made this episode especially relatable for entrepreneurs trying to grow both personally and professionally while managing real-world responsibilities.

What It Really Takes to Be a Business Owner

At the end of every episode of Business Owners Tell All: What It Takes, guests answer one signature question:

“What does it really take to be a business owner?”

Jesse’s answer focused on two things:

  • Being willing to embrace discomfort
  • Setting big, audacious goals

She described entrepreneurship as “eating glass,” meaning business owners must be willing to face difficult problems daily while continuing to move forward.

Her story is a powerful reminder that business owner learning and development never stops. The entrepreneur you are today is not the entrepreneur you will need to become tomorrow.
